What is Humor?

The word humor comes from Latin “Umor” which is related to human nature. Humor is described as something funny, everyone has a different levels of humor. It touches on an assumption that human beings are bound to be in search of happiness. However, due to different levels of humor the response to perceptions of a joke situation may be success or not.

Sense of Humor

Sense of humor is an ability (inside humor) in our daily life whether to solve problems and entertain. There are a good sense of humor and a bad sense of humor, sense of humor depending on one’s maturity. Why? because the sense of humor determines “is it worthy to made a joke?” without hurting or mocking someone’s feelings.

Benefits

One of the best things you can do for your mental health is laughing. Cited from World Economic Forum researchers have found that people who score highly in certain types of humor have better self-esteem, more positive affect, greater self-competency, more control over anxiety, better performance in social interactions and shown that humor can actually improve your physical immune system. Laughter can also improve cardiovascular health and lowers heart rates, blood pressure, and muscular tension.

Cited from Ayo Semarang, humor has been proven by Lee Berk and Stanley A Tan from Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. In 2006, they found two hormones, beta endorphins (reducing depression) increased 27 percent and human growth hormone / HGH (which helps immunity) increased 87 percent when watching funny videos. Humor can also reduce stress. Research from Loma Linda University, found that humor and jokes help reduce levels of 3 hormones related to stress, namely cortisol (stress hormone), epinephrine (adrenaline), and the hormone dopac.

Conclution

Humor can be entertaining and have many benefits, especially in mental health, but it is necessary to pay attention to whether the humor is suitable for consumption or not. Special attention is needed when making jokes so that the jokes not contain discrimination, hate and so as hurt someone’s feelings.
